Hadrat Sayyidina Salman Al-Farsi (Radiyallahu Anhu)’s acceptance of Islam was an eye opening story for us, how a person leaved everything in search for the true Lord. According to Ulama he lived for 350 to 400 hundred years, therefore, he accepted the true faith revealed on Isa (Alayhissalam) at first and after that he accepted Islam after the prophet (S.W’s) migration to Madeenatul Munawwarah.
Salman Al-Farsi (Radiyallahu anhu) was born in Khurasan (Persia). His father was a leader of his place, thus he was a son of a leader. He brought up with love and kindness of his father. His father did hard effort in Juhd and Mujahada of his faith to become successful in his faith Zarathustrianism (Fire worship) that he became the care taker of the temple. The small Salman (Radiyallahu anhu) was growing up seeing his father and people doing fire worship but his heart always looked for the truth from his childhood.
One day his father sent him somewhere for some work, during his way he passed a Christian church, he got curious and went inside to see the place. He had seen some Christian was praying, he kept standing there to see what they do, he liked what he had seen there, he got so much attached with their worship and words of those people that he remain with them until evening of that day. Before leaving them in the evening he asked them where is there real worship place, they informed him, its in Sham (Syria). Then he returned home, his parents were very anxious for him, they asked him where had he been the entire day. The small boy informed them the whole story of the people he had seen, their worship and talks. His father understood he liked them, he got scared inside, he said to his son at once,
“That religion is not good, your religion and your forefathers religion is the best”.
Little Salman (Radiyallahu anhu) replied, “ No, that religion is the best”.
His Father had the knowledge of his sons desire for the truth and feared he might leave them to join to the new faith. The father kept him chained and locked him up in the house so that he can’t leave the home. He was young boy but was very intelligent, he sent a massage to the Christian people with this question,
“ When the merchant of Sham will come here for trade please inform me”.
Just after some days the Merchants of Sham reached to that place, they sent the message to Salmaan (Radiyallahu Anhu), he slowly keeps loosening his chain, when the time of the Merchants departure came, he cut the already loosed chain and run away from there, the Merchants were waiting for him with their caravan, he joined with the Merchants and leave his land towards Sham in search for truth. It took months to reach sham, as travel from one country to another country was not very easy those days. He left his land for forever towards a foreign land in search for the true Lord.
When he reached to Sham he inquired to the people who was the best and most learned person in this religion. The people showed him a bishop. He went to that bishop and expressed his desire to become Christian, thereafter he accepted Christianity and started staying with the company of the bishop. But after staying someways he found him dishonest, the bishop used to persuade people to give charity and whatever he collected, he used to keep them in his treasure. He did not give anything to the poor. But still after that the little boy Salman (Radiyallahu Anhu) kept staying with the person as he was a leaned man of that religion and stayed until the death of the bishop. After his death another bishop was appointed in his position, he was a pious person and did not care for material things. Salman (Radiyallahu Anhu) keeps staying near him and keeps learning more knowledge from him. When the time of the end that bishop also came near, he asked him whom should he go after his death. The bishop replied,
“ There is only one person in this world who is following the same path and there is no one other than him other than him, he lives in Mosul, you must go to him”. Mosul was in the northwestern Iraq. After the death of the bishop, little boy Salman (Radiyallahu Anhu) travelled again from Syria to Northern Iraq in search for truth. When he reached in Mosul, he found the person and said his whole story. He also allowed him to stay in his company, he was a very good man, Salmaan (Radiyallahu Anhu) got the chance to learn from him too and remained in his service until the persons end. When he was near to his death, again he asked him,
“ Whom should I go after your end?”
He said, “ you should go to a person lives in Naseebyan”.
After the death of him he again travelled long journey towards Naseebyan in search for truth. After reaching that place he narrated his entire story to that bishop, he also allowed him to stay in his service. He learnt from him too until the death of that Bishop. When his death also approached near he asked him Whom to go next? He said “ you should go to a person lives near Ghamuriya”
After the death of the bishop he again travelled towards Ghamuriya in search for truth and start staying with the bishop. Many years passed, he was then an adult person, the Bishop allowed him to earn along with the service of the Bishop. He worked and earned some money, with his money he owned some cattle and sheep. Many years passed, the time of the end of this Bishop also approached near, he asked him,
“ What should I do now?”
The Bishop answered,
“ There is no learned person left who follow our path, the time has come near when the last of all prophets will appear, who will follow the religion of Ibrahim (Alaihissalam). He will born in Arabia and will migrate to a place where many dates grow and on the both side of the place the soil is stony. The prophet will accept gifts, but will not eat from Sadaqah, the seal of Prophet-hood will be in between his two shoulders. If you can go to that place, try to do so”.
The Bishop died few days after that, just few days after the death of the Bishop, few traders from Banu Kalb was passing that place, Sayyidina Salman (Radiyallahu Anhu) went near to them, his desire for truth was such that he said to them,
“ If you take me to Arabia I’ll give you all my sheep’s and cattle’s in return”
They accepted his proposal and they took him with them to Makkah Mukarrama, Sayyidina Salman (Radiyallahu Anhu) gave all his hard earned possession of many days in return to that small favour. But they betrayed him and oppressed him. They said to others he was a slave then they sold him to a Jewish of Banu Quraiza. He bought him and took him to Madinah, it was a place where stony mountain both sides and a place full of date trees. After reaching there, he looked at the place silently and understood, this is the place the bishop told about the last prophet will migrate. He forgot that he became a slave now, in his heart he says “ this is the place”. He started staying there as a slave and keeps waiting for the prophet (S.W’s) arrival.
Then the time came the prophet (S.W) migrated from Makkatul Mukarramah to Madinatul Munawwarah. When the prophet (S.W) was staying in Quba. The people of Madinah were happy and joyful, the last Prophet arrived there, from city to village this news reached to everywhere. The news reached to the Jewish too. People were going in groups to see the noble countenance of the beloved Prophet (S.W). in this happiness Sayyidina Salman (Radiyallahu) was at his usual work, when somebody informed him the last prophet migrated to Madinah, Sayyidina Salman (R.D), the one who was waiting for this moment for long years, leaved his land, travelled from place to places, accepted slavery, its easily imaginable how was this moment for him. But still his intelligence made him not to haste rather know the person first. Sayyidina Salaman (Radiyallhu Anhu) gathered whatever he owned and go to the prophet (S.W) and said to him,
“ These are from Sadaqah”
Rasulullah (S.W) did not partake from the food but gave it to others, Saiyyidina Salman (Radiyallahu Anhu) said to himself “ one sign has been fulfilled”
the next day Sayyidina Salman (Radiyallahu Anhu) again went to the prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) with some dates and foods, then said to the prophet (S.W) “ These are the gifts for you”. The prophet (S.W) partook from there also shared with others, the second sign also fulfilled.
Now the third sign was the seal of the prophet-hood, he keeps attending in the assembly of the prophet (S.W). One day he was in the noble assembly of the Prophet (S.W), it was the Janaaza of one Sahaba (Radiyallahu Anhu), the Prophet (S.W) was attending at the funeral at Jannatul Baqi. He was wearing a sheet that day, Sayyidina Salman (Radiyallahu Anhu) went near to him and greeted him, he was making an attempt to see if there is any seal of prophet-hood in between his shoulder. Rasulullah (S.W) understood it he lifted his sheet a bit so that the seal of prophet-hood could be seen. When it was visible, the third and last sing also fulfilled, the long awaited heart now burst into tears, here is the Habeeb of Allah in front of him! Salman (Radiyallahu Anhu) bowed towards the seal and kissed the seal of prophet hood, he was crying bitterly after founding the truth, The prophet (S.W) called him near and said him to sit in front of him, Sayyidina Salman (Radiyallahu Anhu) came near to him and narrated his whole story to him, the prophet (S.W) told about him while patting him more or less,
“I swear by the name of Allah, in whose hand my life is, even if Imaan was in Ath- Thuraiyah (The highest star) the people of Faaris would have taken it from there also”.
